The Lost Crown of Tesh-Naga: Play-By-Post

How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love PbP

I'll be the first to admit it, I did not like the concept, the very idea of playing Dungeons & Dragons in a play-by-post format. Without the face-to-face aspect, the very heart and soul of the game is lost. If you're going to run a play-by-post game, sitting alone in front of your computer screen, why not just play a video game? I thought play-by-post was for D&D players who didn't have any friends.

I was mistaken.

Through the enormous and overwhelming success of the Fourthcore Team Deathmatch blog, which includes a heavy dosage of play-by-post matches, I have come to learn the strengths of a play-by-post format and have embraced it.

  • I can play D&D on the sly while at work. Blogger gets through the firewall, for the win!
  • It allows friends from across the globe to get together and play a form of D&D. If there were only some sort of official version of this concept, a "virtual table" of sorts. If only.
  • Everyone can play at their own pace, on their own time, only needing to spend a few minutes here and there out of their all-too-busy schedule.
  • Cold and calculated, the players of a play-by-post game offer a scenario to the Dungeon Master where they can bring forth their best ideas without as much of a time pressure. This is very useful for testing out ideas to the breaking point. If your idea doesn't get broke in play-by-post, then it's fool proof for a real game.
  • It's very fun, way more fun than I could have imagined, and way more fun than I'm sure you're thinking.

With that in mind, I want to formally announce that I am looking for players for the DMG 42 Lost-Crown of Tesh-Naga Play-by-Post!

Although the adventure has extremely high replay value, the adventure will be open only to players whom have never before read or played through it. If this is successful, I will run it again with a group of all LCT-N veterans. To those veterans out there: don't spoil anything!

To sign up, simply drop a comment below.

Your ability to comment on this blog is pretty crucial, so that will be your first test. I am looking for at least four players, but hopefully we will grab the maximum number of seven. Due to the special nature of this adventure, character sheets will be limited to fit the guidelines of the seven available character archetypes. More on that when you sign up. I'm looking to wait at least a couple of weeks to start this thing; so mid to late February.

Milwaukee Joe has provided a good summary of how the Play-By-Post style works, which can be found here.

I've spoken about this adventure before: here. I've temporarily disabled the links to make it easier to resist the temptation to look up all the goodies and spoil the fun surprises. That said, it's still possible to do so if you know where to look, so please do not go hunting for the adventure. You'll ruin all the fun!

Centuries ago, this land was ruled by a glorious empire. From coast to coast, the Dhakaani (called "Hobgoblins" in the Human tongue) ruled with an iron fist. During this
time, the Dhakaani Empire created extravagant displays of wealth, power and magic. Like most grand empires, the Dhakaani fell, corrupted from within and tearing at each others’ throats. Masterful artifacts of power were left forgotten in the trample of countless civil wars.

In modern times, the races of Humans, Dwarves, and Elves have found themselves as the dominant races. The Dhakaani are now reduced to a small fraction of their former size and power, struggling to stop their in‐fighting and to bring all of the lesser races as their slaves once again. You are playing a character either asked or forced to the mountainous lands of the Dwarves. Your journey has been ordered by Llesh-Hruuk, an aging Dhakaani warlord of Clan Sharaat. Llesh‐Hruuk believes the remains of a fallen hero lie there. Her name was Decia and was the last known owner of an ancient Dhakaani artifact: The Lost Crown of Tesh-Naga.

You are sent off to the dangerous Dwarven lands as an assorted band which must travel together to ensure the success of this vital mission. You journey to a remote mountaintop locale known as “The Sanctuary of the Sacred Stone” where Decia's remains await to be found.

You must choose one of the seven characters on this adventure:

The mysterious stranger -
The wise councilor -
The brave warrior -
The silver-tongued liar -
The lurking wyrm -
The proud drake -
The dim-witted thug -

  1. Oooooo... Hell, I'm game!

Almost all my games in the last few years have been play-by-post. I was running two games on the WotC forums, but because of that forum's unpredictability (I lost three players, including one that I lost because - and I'm not making this up 0 left because another player, I quote, "conflicted with my pagan beliefs") I abandoned those. I still play in two games over there that post regularly, and it's quite fun.

I can play any number of the roles, but I'll see if others chime in and have preferences.

  2. I would love to play in this game, and I'd be happy with any of the characters except the "silver-tongued liar". I'm not a good liar in real life.

  3. I call dibs on the Brave Warrior*

    * Of course, I'm flexible if someone else really wants the BW.

  4. I'd be up for mysterious stranger or silver-tongued liar.

  5. I'm definitely up for this! I'd say my preference is to go with the silver-tongued liar.

Note: I've also been blown away recently with just how fun PbP can be!

  6. Thusly, Ian has the Mysterious Stranger; leaving The wise councilor, The lurking wyrm, The proud drake, and The dim-witted thug to David and whomever else signs up.

  7. I am so in. I will take on the role of the proud drake or lurking wyrm, which ever is needed more.

  8. I'm indifferent, so... 5(1d8) = 5

    "Lurking wyrm" it is. :P

  9. Huzzah!

Being as this is an adventure I wrote and really enjoy, you can be assured that many of the traditional tropes and expectations during the adventure will be thrown out of the window. That said, none of the characters are particularly more crucial than the others. I heartily encourage everyone signing up to take the character of their choice with impunity.

Neither The Proud Drake nor The Lurking Wyrm asks permission; neither should you!

  10. Henceforth, Franchini will be The Proud Drake!

  11. Oooooooh, I am so down. I'd love to take wise councilor or the lurking wyrm.

  12. Joe #2, Wise Councilor it is!

So within the first hour of me posting this we have all but 1 spot filled. Amazing.

We are down to the dim-witted thug, whom really is just a pleasure and a blast to play.

  14. We're all filled up for this run, but with how quick and popular this is already, I'm already starting to form a list for the next delving!!!

  16. Don't be greedy, Matt, you'll get your chance to do this at the table with Sean etc. at some point!

  17. If you're curious, I'm going to be starting a PBP on the SA forums. It might be ehind a paywall right now, but it will lift after a while. It's only 10 bucks to join, too.

    1. A play-by-post of LCTN? That sounds awesome!!! Please tell us all how it goes, especially who gets crowned, who gets killed, and where.

And if that pay wall lifts say something here. Theres quite a few guys who would love to lurk that game like crazy.
